Domain Renewal Group Scam

domain renewal groupIf you receive a letter from a certain company called Domain Renewal Group, immediately ignore the crap. It’s a scam.

One of my domains is up for renewal and has my mom’s US postal address in the contact’s info. I recently received what looked like an invoice in the post sent by Domain Renewal Group, telling me that my domain was due to expire and that I needed to request to renew it through them. They even add some fear tactic on their message.

“Failure to renew your domain name by the expiration date may result in loss of your online identity…”

At a glance, it looks like an official renewal notice form but if you read more closely, it states that the letter “isn’t an invoice” and that if you return the form and make a payment, your domain will be transferred from your current registrar to them. It also gives the option to renew for 1, 2, or 5 years, as well as purchase the associated .net and .org sites. The offer does not interest me as their rates are way more expensive than what my current registrar wants for an annual renewal.

It’s obvious that they are trying to target some innocent busy people who will just send the payment, thinking that it is an invoice, without taking time to read it properly. I just learned from this post that this has been going on for many years now. There must be lots of innocent victims as they did not stop even after they were sued.

It just makes me mad when people build a business based to ripping off gullible people. A lot of  people has already blogged about it but I still want to do my share. Let’s all help to expose this information. The more exposure we do to this scam, the less effective it becomes.

WP-DBManager Plugin Security Alert

WP-DBManager is a WordPress plugin created by Lester “GamerZ” Chan, which I’ve been using since this blog moved to WordPress almost 2 years ago. WP-DBManager is a tool that makes it possible to create and manage backups of WordPress MySQL databases automatically.

If you are using the WP-DBManager plugin, make sure to have it updated as soon as possible. Old versions of the plugin (2.60 and below) is said to have serious security vulnerability that allows anyone to download the wp-config.php file of the WordPress sites which contains credentials necessary to get full access to the databases – especially dangerous on shared hosts.

Check for more information about WP-DBManager security issues here: http://andreasviklund.com/share/security-alert-wp-dbmanager-plugin-for-wordpress/

WP-DBManager plugin’s latest update version 2.62 which fixed the security vulnerability was just released a fews days ago. Attackers could see this as a good target as this seems to be a popular plugin with more than 300,000 downloads.

For those of you using WP-DBManager plugin, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade it immediately!

Microsoft IE9 Released, Now Available For Download

The long-awaited Internet Explorer 9 or IE9 browser has finally come out of its beta and RC stages and is now available for download.

According to Microsoft, this latest version of its internet web browser puts it ahead of competitors like Google Chrome and Firefox. It introduces a new streamlined interface, improved performance, Windows 7 integration, and more. Privacy and speed are being highlighted as two of the features that set IE9 apart.

One of the great features of IE9 that a lot of people find interesting and useful is the Pinning sites. I have become a huge fan of Pinned Sites feature since it first came out on Windows 7, but I never thought it will be much more useful in an internet browser. Pinned Sites may at first appear similar to bookmarks or favorites but some of the functionality involved goes to a whole new level and it definitely deserves a closer look.

How to disable private browsing in Internet Explorer or IE? This is one of the most common questions that I’ve been getting from time to time.

InPrivate Browsing is a feature introduced to web users using Internet Explorer 8 or IE8 for short, which helps to prevent the browser from recording any kind of data about your browsing activities or habits. Using InPrivate Browsing, there will be no cookies created, no history, no temporary Internet files, no form data, and anything else that a browser would normally store or record. Extension and toolbars are also disabled by default.

If you are a parent who wants to monitor the information stored in your computer to check the online activities of your children or teenagers as most children now know how to enable the InPrivate browsing feature, then disabling the feature would be beneficial. If you’re an IT manager, this feature may hinder your tracking of Internet usage for employees, students, etc. Other than disabling the clear browsing history button, there are times when you need to disable InPrivate Browsing permanently for all users in every computer.

Note: The InPrivate Browsing feature of IE 8 is different than InPrivate Filtering. InPrivate Filtering prevents web content providers to collect information of your web browsing activities rather than prevent the browser from tracking your sessions (InPrivate Browsing).

The following instructions on disabling private browsing in IE8 do not need to download or install any software. Read the rest of this entry
